Labor-Inducing Pineapple Soda

The pineapple soda shows up in Season 1, Episode 8 of Orange is the New Black.  Maria, who’s currently in labor, is trying to speed up her contractions so that she can finally go to the hospital.  Aleida says that she was told to eat a whole pineapple when she was in labor, so Maritza brings Maria some pineapple soda…the best substitute they have in prison.

I’ve actually had pineapple soda a few times in my life, and have loved it every time, so I was excited for this one!

The syrup is made by combining pineapple juice and sugar in a saucepan and boiling it down.

And then for the drink itself, just combine the cooled syrup with seltzer water, add some ice and couple slices of red chile peppers, and you’re good to go!

Unfortunately, this soda did not live up to my expectations, though my husband absolutely loved it.

I thought the chile pepper was a bit too overpowering, and there was not enough pineapple flavor or sweetness for me.  My husband, on the other hand, loved the chile flavor and the fact that it was not an overly sweet soda.  To each his/her own!

I also tried the drink without the chile pepper, and while it tasted slightly better to me, it was still a 7/10.

Difficulty: Easy

The entire recipe is super simple except for making the syrup, but even that isn’t so bad.  You’ll just need to keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn’t bubble out of control.

Cost: Cheap

All you’ll need to buy is some pineapple juice, seltzer water, and a fresh or candied red chile pepper.  You will also need sugar if you don’t already have some.
