First Order French Toast
This is a baked french toast recipe based off the military dictatorship in the Star Wars movies. Usually I prefer french toast that’s cooked over the stove, but I’m still on the lookout for a baked french toast recipe that compares, so I was happy to test this one out!
The 9×13 pan is buttered well and the 1lb. loaf of bread is sliced into 1-inch thick slices. The recipe suggests overlapping the bread, but I didn’t have enough slices to fill the pan completely so mine didn’t overlap.
The eggs, milk, half the sugar (I accidentally put the full amount in) and vanilla are combined, and poured evenly over the bread slices. The whole pan is refrigerated at least 2 hours, or overnight.
Once you’re ready to cook, sprinkle the bread with cinnamon and sugar before cooking. The 2 tsp. the recipe called for seemed like a bit much, so I used 1.5 tsp. instead.
Once finished, my french toast popped up a lot in the middle. But after the 10-minute wait period it did deflate and look like normal again. Then serve with butter and maple syrup!
Taste: 8/10
The flavor was very good, but I found it a little too soft and mushy in the middle and didn’t enjoy the layer of egg on the bottom. My husband loved it, however.
Difficulty: Easy
Nothing tricky about this recipe, as with most of the Star Wars recipes! Just combine things and pour them over the bread.
Cost: Cheap
You will need a loaf of bread, eggs, low-fat milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, butter and maple syrup.
