Curried Favor of the Old Ones
The Great Old Ones in the Necronomicon are ancient gods that ruled the Earth before mankind. They are now imprisoned far away, where no man has ever been.
This chicken sweet potato curry doesn’t really relate to the book other than the title, but it is very good. And since it’s a slow cooker dish, it’s also pretty darn easy!
Spices are mixed together first in a small dish or bowl.
Then, into a slow cooker, the ingredients are added: chicken, water and coconut milk, butter, garlic, the spice mixture, sweet potatoes, onion, and pickled beets.
Then just let the slow cooker do its thing, and serve with rice!
Now it didn’t say to shred the chicken, but that made the most amount of sense to me given that they’re full chicken breasts in there! The chicken was soft enough that it fell apart easily so I didn’t need to go through the effort of removing it from the slow cooker first before breaking it into pieces.
I love coconut curry, and this was delicious. I would cut the sweet potato into smaller chunks next time, but that was about it. My husband thought there was too much sweet potato for his liking, and that was the only part he didn’t like about it.
Just toss everything in the slow cooker and let it do its thing.
Mostly this is chicken and veggies, but if you don’t have some of the spices you’ll need to buy them and spices aren’t usually very cheap. Ingredients include turmeric, coriander, salt, sugar, curry powder, chicken breasts, coconut milk, butter, garlic, sweet potatoes, sweet onion, pickled beets, and jasmine rice.
The Unknown Ka’Squash
Now this recipe looks a little more Lovecraftian!
I’ve only had spaghetti squash once before and I hated it, but obviously I had made it wrong because I would definitely make this again!
The squash is baked in the oven, and then shredded with a fork to look like spaghetti.
The squash is then mixed with olive oil, basil, garlic, and Parmesan and shaped into two piles on a baking sheet. These piles are topped with tomato halves, mozzarella, and more Parmesan.
This was really tasty, and I know the cheese helped in a big way. Of course the baked tomato on top is delicious as well!
You’ll probably want to reference the pictures on the main recipe page (vs. the cheat sheet in the back) to see what this really should look like. They’re not exactly clear on how the tomato is positioned in the general instructions.
Cost: Cheap / Average
You’ll need a spaghetti squash, salt and pepper, brown sugar, olive oil, basil, garlic, Parmesan, tomato, and mozzarella.
