Manny’s Prosciutto, Gruyere and Fig Panini

Manny: I’m just going to make myself a grilled cheese. I think I saw some Gruyere in there. Do we have any fig? – Season 5, Episode 22

This is another fairly easy recipe to put together from the Modern Family Cookbook, with the only prep beforehand being shredding the Gruyere cheese.

I had to substitute the bread in this one, as I couldn’t find “Chicago-Style Italian Bread.” I used sourdough instead.

The ingredients are layered on the bread, with fig preserves being spread on one half. Then the outside of the bread is sprayed with cooking spray and pressed in a panini press.

The alternate option if you don’t have a panini press (like me!) is to cook the sandwich on the stove similar to a grilled cheese, and press the sandwich flat with a spatula or another pan.

Taste: 9/10

Prosciutto, Gruyere and arugula all go very well together, and while I was hesitant about the fig preserves it’s light enough that it doesn’t overpower the rest of the ingredients and adds just a bit of sweetness.

Difficulty: Easy

This is basically as easy as making a grilled cheese sandwich – even easier if you have a panini press!

Cost: Average

You’ll need “Chicago-style Italian bread,” prosciutto, Gruyere cheese, arugula leaves, fig preserves and cooking spray.
