Gloria and Manny’s Tomato Soup and Grilled Cheese

Gloria: I think it’s adorable that Manny has a date. He even picked out the lunch menu. Grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup. Tomato soup because, you know, that tomato soup looks like the blood and the vampires like to eat the blood. And then he wants me to take them out for ice cream, well, because Manny likes ice cream. – Season 1 Episode 13
Until this recipe, I’ve actually NEVER had tomato soup. I know it’s a classic, but as a kid I hated tomatoes (but loved tomato sauce, so figure that one out) so I automatically assumed I’d hate tomato soup. After trying this, I know I definitely would have loved this as a kid and was missing out!

The soup is made first. Onion, garlic, sugar and tarragon are sauteed, followed by the rest of the ingredients being added and simmered for half an hour. At this point, the soup is blended to make it smooth before adding half-and-half and cream and keeping it warm over the stove.

While the soup simmers, the grilled cheese sandwiches are made. Nothing unique about this – it’s just a grilled cheese. But they do use the old processed American cheese slices, like you had as a kid.

Taste: 9/10
This was near perfection for me. The tomato soup was amazing, and the grilled cheese tasted SO good dipped in the soup! The only thing I would change is the type of cheese. While the American cheese did taste like my childhood, regular cheese is better in my opinion.
Difficulty: Easy
Nothing difficult about this one! And the fact that the soup can be kept warm over the stove once it’s done takes the pressure off to have the soup and sandwiches done at the same time.
Cost: Average
Most of the ingredients are pretty cheap, but there are several items you’ll need to purchase.
