Peeta’s Spirit-Lifting Hot Chocolate with Vanilla Whipped Cream
“‘They call it hot chocolate,’ says Peeta, ‘It’s good.'” – The Hunger Games, Chapter 4
This was more work than I’ve ever put into hot chocolate, but the result was 100% worth it!
For the hot chocolate itself, the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt are combined with water and boiled over the stove until completely combined. Then milk, half and half, and chocolate chips are added and cooked until the chocolate chips are melted.
The whipped cream involved whipping heavy cream in a frozen metal bowl until peaks start to form, and then adding vanilla and confectioner’s sugar.
A dollop of the whipped cream was put into each mug of hot chocolate, and it was ready to drink!
The result was a very rich and thick hot chocolate that was absolutely delicious! The vanilla whipped cream was very good as well, and my husband actually just ate the whipped cream by itself.
Taste: 10/10
We LOVED this! The milk upset my husband’s stomach, so “unfortunately” I had to finish off most of the hot chocolate by myself.
*sigh* oh well!
Difficulty: Average
Usually hot chocolate is an easy recipe to make, but this particular recipe involves more effort.
You will need to monitor the cocoa/water mix closely in the beginning to make sure you don’t burn it, and then again later once you add the chocolate chips.
Also be ready to spend some time on that whipped cream. It takes a while to for heavy cream to stiffen into a whipped cream, even with an electric beater!
Cost: Average
You’ll likely need to purchase milk, since the recipe calls for quite a bit. Other possible purchases include half-and-half, chocolate chips, heavy cream, confectioner’s sugar, and cocoa powder.
Suggestion:
I highly recommend using an electric beater for the whipped cream, as it will make your life a lot easier and save you a ton of time.
