Luschek’s Hot Chocolate & Schnapps
It’s Friday night, and we’re celebrating the start of our weekend with some Hot Chocolate and Schnapps!
In the show, Luschek hands Fischer, the female guard, a hot chocolate. She takes a sip, winces, and asks if it has schnapps in it. Whoops! He accidentally gave her the wrong one.
In the cookbook, it’s described as the seasonal drink Luschek enjoys in the winter, spiked with some cough syrup from his car’s glove box to help him face the group of angry female inmates each day.
We didn’t use cough syrup though – peppermint schnapps sounded a lot better!
The method was really simple: combine everything but the chocolate into a saucepan and heat through.
Then, remove from heat and add chocolate until it’s all melted.
That’s it!
I found that the chocolate didn’t actually melt all the way, so next time I might try melting it while the mixture is still on the stove. It did make for a nice chocolatey surprise at the end, though!
Taste: 10/10
The hot chocolate was very creamy and delicious! It had a good amount of milk/cream vs. chocolate, and the cayenne pepper was really good with the chocolate.
I would actually add more schnapps next time, but only because I felt like the drink wasn’t strong enough, and not for flavor.
Difficulty: Easy
Just mix everything together and bring to a simmer.
Cost: Average
You will need to purchase schnapps (either cinnamon or peppermint) and bittersweet chocolate. You might need to buy milk, heavy cream, and cayenne pepper as well.
Suggestion:
If you’re hoping for a buzz off of this drink, I would add more schnapps than they list in the recipe.
Also, you may find that you need to heat the milk up a bit more after adding the chocolate in order to melt it all.
